My boyfriend Corey and I are very much alike…and very much different. I’d say we are a pretty fantastic ying and yang.
When it comes to travel, I want to explore and Corey wants to relax. In other words, I’m like a kid on candy crack while Corey is sipping on a beer with his feet up. Yet somehow, we usually find a happy medium, and 24 hours in Menorca would be that perfect balance.
We like places that are a little less touristy: diamonds in the rough. Menorca, often called the jewel of the Balearics, would be the ideal place for a mixture of adventure and relaxation. So here we go!
8:00am: Breakfast! Sweet Tooth Tootsie would, of course, be coming along, and it would be some of the island’s famous Ensaimadas to wake us up. I’ll need to get a local recipe for these… Meanwhile, three cups of coffee for Corey.
10:00am: Our day would begin with sea kayaking. Some say this is the best way to explore the island. While we would love to call ourselves the “outdoorsy types”, we are still fairly new to kayaking. As shown below, we are better at taking pictures on kayaks than actually kayaking.
We would probably do well with a beginner/intermediate tour like “Paddle in Spain’s” kayak and snorkel tour out of Fornells. They paddle through Fornell’s Bay and the cliffs of la Mola de Fornells(see below), snorkel in La cueva del inglés, swim at Cala Sala and take a break for a snack (ahem, more ensaimadas) in s’Arenelet beach which is only accessible from the sea! Perfect!
2:00pm: Our afternoon would be spent on one of Menorca’s beautiful beaches, sipping frozen drinks, swimming, and napping in the sunshine. Perhaps Son Bou, Cala Turqueta if we feel up to the hike, or Cala Galdana, where we can have lunch by the sea. I’ve also read that there is a beautiful neighboring beach, Cala Mitjana, that you can hike to and take a romantic swim among rocks and pine trees. Poetic.
7:00pm: Time for a kick-ass dinner and drinks.
We LOVE to eat (see photo).
Perhaps we stop at the cave top bar at Cala en Porter for a sunset drink, or head to Ciutadella for some famous lobster stew, a walk along the cobblestone streets, and a stay at the Hotel Tres Sants. Or we could head to the highly recommended Bar Sa Mesquida for dinner and find a agrotourismo or other untraditional housing along the coast near Mahon. Regardless: local fresh food, drink, and a luxurious comfy bed.
A full 24 hours with adventure, relaxation, and good food. Smelling of fresh air and sea salt, our bellies full, we would end our day with a walk by the water and of course a cheesey self-taken photo to remember our amazing day in Menorca.
Oh and… 8:00am: Full circle. More of these. Footnote: This is how you gain weight on vacation.
